My abstract work was initially inspired by the random marks created by the years of wear and tear on the pavements of our villages, towns and cities. Using a restricted palette, different for each painting, I paint intuitively, layering, wet into wet, scraping back, adding taking away, reaching a stage when I know I must leave the work to dry returning when the work is dry. Layering of paint and marks continues until I can see a balance of composition, colour, a completeness of all factors. It is an exciting and rewarding process, I love it! My stylised figurative work is a perfect foil to my abstract work, I know from the beginning where each is going, while I produce a painting with an obvious likeness to my subject, I allow exaggeration and distortion, producing a quirky, fun and complimentary image of my subject.
