Whittling Character from Every Cut Caleb Hoffman Whittling Character from Every Cut

Caleb Hoffman brings wood to life – carving expressive figures, whimsical marionettes and handcrafted ornaments with a timeless, storybook charm.

Originally from the United States, Caleb now works from his Suffolk studio, specialising in the flat-plane Scandinavian style of carving. Each piece is shaped by hand – unique, characterful and made to last. His work has been featured in Woodcarving Magazine and shown at the Fox Yard Art Gallery in Stowmarket.

You might discover his intricate carvings in person at the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn, 21–31 August 2025.

Evocative Landscapes, Rooted in Place

Lorna Hoey’s work is shaped by contrast – the high, open skies of Suffolk set against the rugged coastline and patchwork fields of her native Northern Ireland.

Using pastel, acrylic and pen and wash, she creates expressive, atmospheric landscapes inspired by time spent sketching out on the water meadows and walking the local paths. Nature is her starting point, but her finished pieces often evolve through imagination – rich with texture, mood and season.

Now based in Sudbury, Lorna draws on her experience as both artist and teacher, and finds inspiration in the Suffolk tradition of observation and mark-making – particularly the powerful work of Harry Becker.

Her work nay be exhibited at the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn, running from 21–31 August 2025.

Movement, Metal and the Magic of Shadow Spadge Ho Movement, Metal and the Magic of Shadow

Spadge Hopkins works in steel and copper – shaping sculptures that shift with the light, catch the breeze, or spin on subtle motors. From Anglo Saxon-inspired forms to dogs, birds and rock legends, his creations move between concept and craft, drawing on decades of artistic experimentation and a life immersed in design, engineering and music.

Whether it’s a large cormorant beside the River Deben or a delicate kinetic piece inside your home, Spadge’s work plays with contrast – volume and void, shine and shadow, control and chaos.

You may be able to see his work in person at the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn, 21–31 August.

🦋 Carolyn Hinchliffe – Nature in Full Colour 🦋 Carolyn Hinchliffe – Nature in Full Colour

Carolyn Hinchliffe’s paintings celebrate the richness of the natural world – bold botanicals, vivid birds and butterflies, all captured in striking detail and vibrant acrylics.

Originally trained in textiles and printmaking, Carolyn’s artistic eye is finely tuned to pattern and colour. Her work often zooms in on the delicate textures of a petal or the shimmer of feathers – those fleeting moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Although she’s not opening her studio this summer, you may catch her work at the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at the beautiful Holton Lodge Barn, 21–31 August.

Steve Higton – Coastlines, Light and Legacy Ste Steve Higton – Coastlines, Light and Legacy

Steve Higton paints with the soul of someone who truly knows the sea. From atmospheric skies to still creeks and boats at low tide, his oil paintings capture the ever-changing character of the East Anglian coast.

Originally from Nottingham, Steve’s path to professional painting wasn’t linear – a corporate career came first, but art never left his side. A chapter living in Utah reignited his focus, and on returning to Suffolk in 2008, he committed fully to the easel.

Now based in Stradbroke, Steve draws constant inspiration from the landscape and the artistic heritage of East Anglia. You can see his work this summer at the Suffolk Open Studios Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn, 21–31 August.

Born in India, Mita brings a deep sense of colour and rhythm to her art. She began painting at 40 and has followed an intuitive, self-taught path ever since – creating striking, atmospheric pieces that evoke joy and curiosity.

Her work will be on display at the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn, 21–31 August 2025.
