Flamework
Media Type
Glass
Sculpting molten glass in the flame.
I sculpt Murano glass in an intense flame to create wearable art. Flamework (Lampwork) is the tabletop version of glassblowing.
Biography/Details

I've been working in hot glass for two decades, coming from a BA in Silversmithing & Jewellery and a background in curating and teaching art. Every glass element large or small is created entirely by me, in the flame. I am inspired by people, places, objects, artefacts and stories. My glass celebrates colour, pattern, light and the beauty of the small.

I am a selected member of the Suffolk Craft Society, an Associate Member of Designer Makers 21 in Diss and am listed in the Crafts Council Directory, I have been with SOS since 2011. Find up to date information on where to find my work on my website, Instagram or Facebook pages. Also find my glass at Walsingham Gallery & Frame in Norfolk, Designer Makers 21 in Diss and Craftco in Southwold.

Stylised Landscapes, Rooted in Observation Anne L Stylised Landscapes, Rooted in Observation

Anne Lowe’s paintings draw inspiration from the landscape – not as a precise record, but as a place of rhythm, shape and suggestion. Working in mixed media, her stylised approach captures the essence of a scene through colour, texture and a thoughtful balance between representation and abstraction.

After studying art at college, Anne continued to develop her practice alongside teaching, later attending non-vocational classes at Brighton Art School with Norma Weller. Over the past decade, she’s built her work through solo exploration and collaborative learning – including workshops with a variety of artists and time spent working with David Pairpoint.

Now part of the Sudbury Art Collective, Anne continues to paint with a strong sense of place and a quiet, reflective energy.

If you’re looking to discover more artists working in and around Suffolk, the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) offers a wonderful introduction.

Unearthing Stories in Sand and Oil Caroline Lovet Unearthing Stories in Sand and Oil

Caroline Lovett’s paintings feel like fragments of memory – dreamlike, mysterious and emotionally charged. Working with oil, sand and earth, she creates figurative compositions that speak quietly but insistently, drawing the viewer into unspoken narratives of place, people and belonging.

A self-taught painter until recently, Caroline studied at The Essential School of Painting in Wood Green, where she developed a practice rooted in both personal history and wider human experience. Her earlier works captured vivid social gatherings – raves, hen parties, moments of joyful chaos – but more recently, her paintings have become more contemplative, exploring themes of migration, loss and memory.

Growing up in 1960s London in a family of Irish descent, with a father who worked the land through excavation, Caroline now returns to that connection – not with machinery, but with a brush. Her use of sand is symbolic as well as textural, part of an ongoing excavation into the layers that make us who we are.

For those looking to discover powerful, story-rich work from Suffolk artists, the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a great place to begin.

Stories Stitched in Thread and Time Juliet Lockha Stories Stitched in Thread and Time

Juliet Lockhart creates art that feels unearthed as much as made – stitching together past and present through found objects, textiles and the quiet rhythm of handcraft. Her work draws on personal memory, overlooked histories and the landscapes we walk through without always noticing.

Using vintage linen, paper, thread and archive materials, Juliet constructs layered pieces that give voice to people and places often forgotten. Puppets, stitched faces, and fragments of narrative invite viewers to slow down – to listen, reflect, and perhaps find something of themselves.

She gathers inspiration from books, museum collections, and the land itself – collecting, walking, writing, then letting those experiences shape what emerges in the studio.

Based in Suffolk, Juliet also runs workshops, online courses and mentoring, sharing her thoughtful, story-driven process with others.

To discover more local artists exploring memory, place and material, visit the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August).

Bold Colour and Abstract Emotion

Marian Lishman’s abstract paintings are rich with energy, movement and feeling – expressive works that speak through colour and texture rather than literal forms. Inspired by the coast and the emotional pull of place, her pieces often hint at landscape while inviting personal interpretation.

Now based in Ipswich, Marian’s art career began in Dubai, where she worked professionally for several years creating work for private collectors, designers and hotels – including commissions for members of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family. Since returning to the UK in 2011, she’s continued to build a strong presence across East Anglia’s art scene.

Her work is joyful, vibrant and unmistakably her own – shaped by instinct and a lifelong curiosity for how colour connects with emotion.

For a broader look at Suffolk’s creative landscape, the Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is well worth a visit.

Art That Connects to the Senses Linda Leong-Son c Art That Connects to the Senses

Linda Leong-Son creates from feeling – her mixed media works are layered with colour, memory and emotion, drawing inspiration from land, sea, sound, scent and the everyday poetry of life. Based in Suffolk, she paints from a place of connection – to family, to nature, and to the stories that shape who we are.

Working mainly in acrylic on canvas and using a fluid mix of pen, pencil, oil and watercolour, Linda brings a vibrant energy to every piece. Her art doesn’t just speak visually – it reaches for the senses, drawing the viewer into a conversation that feels both personal and universal.

For over 40 years, Linda’s work has found homes with collectors across the UK and internationally – each piece offering a spark of joy, a moment of reflection, or simply a feeling you want to keep close.

If you’re looking to explore Suffolk’s creative community, the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a brilliant place to start.

Shaped by Hand, Refined by Fire Annie Lee’s cer Shaped by Hand, Refined by Fire

Annie Lee’s ceramics blend the functional and the sculptural – wheel-thrown cups and bowls sit alongside hand-built vessels that have been reshaped, altered and remodelled into something uniquely expressive.

Working with slips and glazes, Annie creates surfaces that speak softly – smooth curves, quiet colours, and a sense of form that comes from years of experimentation. Her pieces often begin with traditional methods, but evolve into contemporary interpretations that reflect a deep understanding of clay.

With a background in 3D design and postgraduate studies in ceramics from Camberwell and Sir John Cass, Annie has also taught widely – from London schools and colleges to her own private studio, and as a Creative Partnerships tutor with the Arts Council.

For those curious about the range of ceramic practices across the county, the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) offers a rich and varied showcase.

LayerTree – Sculpting Wood with Steam and Imagin LayerTree – Sculpting Wood with Steam and Imagination

LayerTree brings a modern sensibility to the ancient art of steam bending – reshaping wood through heat and moisture into elegant, functional forms. From lighting and furniture to garden pieces and giftware, every piece is designed with precision, purpose and a strong respect for the material.

Founded by product designers Myles and Madeleine, this husband-and-wife team has spent over a decade refining their approach. Sustainability is built into every bend – steam bending is a low-energy, low-waste method that preserves the integrity of the wood without carving it away.

Alongside their finished pieces, LayerTree also runs hands-on experience days, sharing their specialist knowledge and helping others create beautifully bent wood objects of their own.

For a wider look at creative craft across the region, the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a great place to start.
