Finding Beauty in the Everyday Esther Keeble pain Finding Beauty in the Everyday

Esther Keeble paints with warmth and honesty – drawing inspiration from daily life, local landscapes, animals and quiet moments of homelife. Her paintings feel like gentle observations, full of atmosphere and affection for the ordinary.

Having returned to art after a break, Esther began with sketching before moving into oils – a medium she loves for its tactile quality – and more recently, watercolour, which she describes as joyful and immediate. Whether working from a walk in the countryside or people-watching in town, her work reflects a strong sense of presence and personal connection.

She has exhibited locally and in Cambridge and is continuing to build her practice with new work and upcoming shows.

The Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a great opportunity to explore artists working in similar threads of memory, place and daily life.

Elegant Forms in Clay Diana Kazemi creates wheel- Elegant Forms in Clay

Diana Kazemi creates wheel-thrown ceramics that are both functional and refined – working in stoneware and porcelain to make domestic pieces with a quiet, sculptural grace.

Inspired by Middle Eastern pottery and glassware, Diana’s work focuses on form first. Glazes are used sparingly to enhance rather than distract, allowing the shape and balance of each bowl, jug or vessel to speak for itself. Alongside her tableware, she also produces a small range of ceramic jewellery – delicate pieces that share the same sense of care and simplicity.

Originally trained in Tasmania, with early influences from teachers in Letchworth and Sydney, Diana is now based in Clare, Suffolk. Her practice is rooted in craft and purpose – clay made useful, beautiful, and lasting.

The Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a wonderful opportunity to explore the breadth of ceramics being made across the region.

Landscape, Structure and Subtle Shifts

Alan Kay’s paintings often sit somewhere between observation and abstraction – capturing the relationship between natural landscape and the built environment with a quiet sensitivity.

Originally from Fife and later based in Edinburgh, Alan now paints in Suffolk, where he continues to explore new materials and techniques through a process-led practice. His background in community development and education has shaped a reflective approach to artmaking – one that values experimentation, structure and place.

Using acrylics, oils and mixed media, Alan’s landscapes often feature man-made elements – houses, bridges, sheds – embedded in the landscape rather than imposed upon it. The result is a body of work that is grounded, contemporary and quietly contemplative.

The Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a great chance to explore a wide range of local artists working in landscape and beyond.

Quiet Beauty in Clay Kim Croysdill creates cerami Quiet Beauty in Clay

Kim Croysdill creates ceramics that celebrate imperfection – stoneware and raku pots shaped by hand, by fire, and by the spirit of wabi-sabi. Each piece is unique, embracing natural textures and the quiet elegance of simplicity.

Working from her garden studio in the Suffolk countryside, Kim uses minimal glazes to let the clay speak. Her work often draws on the colours and forms of the natural world – from garden foliage to the organic flow of water or bark.

Raku, wood firing, and the use of oxides give her vessels their character – sometimes cracked, sometimes smoky, always individual.

The Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a great way to explore artists working in clay and beyond.

Transforming the Unwanted into the Unexpected Sus Transforming the Unwanted into the Unexpected

Susie Joyce collects what others discard – rusty metal, packaging, broken bits of once-useful things – and gives them new life through sculpture, collage, print and paint. Her studio is filled with the raw materials of transformation, waiting to be assembled into something intriguing, curious or quietly beautiful.

From mutolito prints and colourful reliefs to assemblages and framed collages, Susie’s work is driven by intuition and tactility – a love of materials and a sense of play. Whether she’s etching or building with found objects, there’s always a desire to provoke thought, or at least spark a second look.

If you’re drawn to work that celebrates process and reinvention, the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a great place to begin exploring.

Exploring Place Through Process and Perception St Exploring Place Through Process and Perception

Steve Joyce’s work is rooted in observation – but never limited by it. Through painting, drawing, collage and mixed media, he explores the way we experience landscape, memory and the world around us.

His Land/Marks project reflects this ongoing inquiry – using familiar places as a starting point, but often abstracting or reimagining them through texture, colour and form. From standalone pieces to larger installations, Steve’s practice resists repetition – each medium and method chosen in response to a particular idea or experience.

A graduate of Norwich University of the Arts, with a Master’s from Colchester Institute, Steve now balances teaching, commissions and personal practice. He regularly leads courses and workshops across Suffolk – at Flatford, Stokebridge and the Ipswich Institute – sharing his deep interest in both process and interpretation.

If you’re looking to explore Suffolk’s rich creative community, the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) offers a great snapshot of artists working across a range of disciplines.

Landscapes That Hold a Memory James Johnson paint Landscapes That Hold a Memory

James Johnson paints with a deep connection to place. Inspired by the wild, shifting beauty of the outdoors – from the Wye Valley to the Lake District and now the Suffolk countryside – his acrylic paintings capture moments of stillness and movement in equal measure.

After studying Fine Art in Norwich and spending years walking, working and living across the UK, James found his creative rhythm through seasonal living and time spent immersed in nature. His work leans into impressionism and expressionism – expressive brushwork, rich tones and a strong emotional response to the land.

Now based in Suffolk and working in forestry, James continues to paint and sketch whenever he can. For those exploring Suffolk’s art scene, the Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) offers a brilliant window into the talent across the county.

Memory, Place and the Layers Between Ilona Johnso Memory, Place and the Layers Between

Ilona Johnson’s mixed media work draws from two landscapes – the Suffolk countryside she now calls home, and the remembered terrain of her African childhood. Each piece distils emotion and memory into texture, colour and form.

Having studied Fine Art at Maidstone and later completed an MA at UEL, Ilona has quietly built a long-standing practice alongside a career as an art psychotherapist.

Her work has been exhibited at venues including the Royal Academy, The Mall Galleries and The Minories, and is held in public and private collections.

Working intuitively, she explores how personal experience and environment shape each other – a creative thread that continues to evolve in her Suffolk studio.

The Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn (21–31 August) is a great way to explore the breadth of artists working across the county – Ilona among them.
