Joss Munson is a multi disciplinary artist who works with video/sound, image making, writing and performance. His work takes the form of a subject that has an underlying theme, statement or story. Common themes include his own understanding of himself and his experiences. He uses art as a reflection, a kind of documentation that says something about the stage that he is at in life. His work can be playful and funny but can also be quite dark and serious, all depending on what he has to express. His aim is to make artwork that is more accessible to normal people.
Born in a little town in Suffolk, Joss was diagnosed with atypical autism at the age of 13 and was later at the age of 18 diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.
Joss has over the span of 3 years developed what he refers to as 'gender poop'. His debut drag attempt, Boobzilla, had a universe built around her. Over the timespan of her fictional career, she has been a model, a director for a low budget reality TV show, she has become a singer songwriter, killed off and has risen from the dead. Joss put on a one man show “the unofficial Resident Evil Pantomime” (2020), in which he cosplayed as a character from the Resident Evil video game. In the show, it was a collection of cabaret type dancing, lip syncing and improvisation from the audience. Joss’ work ranges from it being straight forward to it being rather abstract. He finds it important for there to be a meaning. His influence includes artists such as Susan Hiller, (particularly, the way in which she curates her work), Jean Michel Basquiat, Tracey Emin.
