Having studied Art & Design at Suffolk and postgraduate studies in Art & The Book at Colchester, I worked in Bookart and Printmaking for a number of years, before returning to an early interest in painting. I work, for the most part, abstractly in acrylics and mixed media.
My painting practice began with landscape. For me, landscape excites feelings of humility because of its grandeur and awe at the intricacy of its constituent parts. I cannot replicate the beauty of Creation but I can echo the emotion it creates in me and, I hope, inspire that feeling in the viewer. This has led to increasingly abstract paintings.
Each work is an intuitive exploration of how colours interact to express a feeling. I often use my own painted or printed collage papers to build layers, using a variety of tools to create the mood of a half-remembered experience. Sometimes, a hint of figuration makes itself apparent.
I teach drawing & painting classes at Mill Tye Gallery, Great Cornard, catering for all levels of experience (for details see www.milltyegallery.co.uk). I find great satisfaction in helping people develop their artistic potential, especially when they don’t think they have any! I am a member of Colchester Art Society and Art Tribe.
Media Type
I work intuitively in acrylics and multi-media, exploring colour in expressionist paintings that are abstract evocations of emotion, (although sometimes a figurative subject may emerge!).
