Layered Stories in Paint and Print Karenza Jackso Layered Stories in Paint and Print

Karenza Jackson’s work is vibrant, textural and full of personality – from joyful still lifes to lively garden scenes, her pieces often offer a window into a moment of quiet beauty, curiosity or wildness.

Working from a converted outbuilding in her garden in Shimpling, Karenza uses acrylics, collage, monoprint, watercolour and pastel to build her images – layering marks, colour and texture in playful yet precise ways. Birds, flowers and glimpses of landscape frequently make their way into her compositions, echoing her love of nature and everyday surroundings.

She’s a long-standing member of Colchester Art Society and Gainsborough’s House, and her work has been exhibited widely across East Anglia – from Snape and Woodbridge to Firstsite in Colchester.

Alongside her studio practice, Karenza runs workshops for adults, children and groups with special needs, sharing her passion for creativity with others.

Abstracts That Speak Without Words AJ paints from Abstracts That Speak Without Words

AJ paints from feeling – not formula. Their abstract works explore memory, emotion and the complexity of lived experience, using texture, light and colour to invite a sensory response.

A Fine Art graduate who stepped away from the canvas to raise a family and pursue a more conventional path, AJ has returned to painting following medical retirement – rediscovering creative purpose and a renewed drive to communicate through art.

Each piece is an attempt to translate emotion into form, encouraging the viewer to connect, reflect and find their own story within the layers.

Sol Indurain – Light, Detail and a Touch of Nost Sol Indurain – Light, Detail and a Touch of Nostalgia

Sol Indurain paints in pure watercolour – vibrant, carefully observed pieces often drawn from personal memories and seaside scenes. Originally from a coastal village in northern Spain, Sol brings a sense of light, atmosphere and quiet storytelling to every brushstroke.

Inspired by artists like Joaquín Sorolla and David Poxon, their work leans into sunlight and simplicity – capturing moments that feel familiar yet full of meaning.

Many of Sol’s paintings evoke the past, with a focus on detail and a direct, intuitive approach to colour.

Working from photographs, Sol takes on commissions and continues to build a body of work that’s as thoughtful as it is luminous.

Colour, Glass and Imagination Gay Hutchings works Colour, Glass and Imagination

Gay Hutchings works across glass, painting and printmaking – an artist whose creativity spans decades and disciplines, but always returns to colour, light and nature.

From stained glass commissions for churches and hospitals to vibrant fused-glass sculptures, Gay’s work is full of energy and invention. Her painting and printmaking are equally experimental – layering monoprints, screen prints and collage to create bold, imaginative images often inspired by travel and memory.

Now based in Lavenham, she continues to explore the rich textures and shifting shapes of the natural world, whether in a tulip print or a sculpted panel of glowing glass.

Portraits with Power and Presence Ali Hollingswor Portraits with Power and Presence

Ali Hollingsworth’s work is layered – in both material and meaning. Using oil, acrylic and chalk, she creates expressive portraits that explore identity, history and the African diaspora.

With a strong narrative thread running through her paintings, Ali invites the viewer to pause – to sit with the gaze, the gestures, and the stories that often lie just beneath the surface. Her work speaks softly, but it stays with you.

You can explore more of Ali’s powerful portraiture via her website and Instagram.

Whittling Character from Every Cut Caleb Hoffman Whittling Character from Every Cut

Caleb Hoffman brings wood to life – carving expressive figures, whimsical marionettes and handcrafted ornaments with a timeless, storybook charm.

Originally from the United States, Caleb now works from his Suffolk studio, specialising in the flat-plane Scandinavian style of carving. Each piece is shaped by hand – unique, characterful and made to last. His work has been featured in Woodcarving Magazine and shown at the Fox Yard Art Gallery in Stowmarket.

You might discover his intricate carvings in person at the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn, 21–31 August 2025.

Evocative Landscapes, Rooted in Place

Lorna Hoey’s work is shaped by contrast – the high, open skies of Suffolk set against the rugged coastline and patchwork fields of her native Northern Ireland.

Using pastel, acrylic and pen and wash, she creates expressive, atmospheric landscapes inspired by time spent sketching out on the water meadows and walking the local paths. Nature is her starting point, but her finished pieces often evolve through imagination – rich with texture, mood and season.

Now based in Sudbury, Lorna draws on her experience as both artist and teacher, and finds inspiration in the Suffolk tradition of observation and mark-making – particularly the powerful work of Harry Becker.

Her work nay be exhibited at the Suffolk Open Studios Summer Exhibition at Holton Lodge Barn, running from 21–31 August 2025.
