From theatre sets to wire sculptures – Gerry Spi From theatre sets to wire sculptures – Gerry Spiller’s creative journey spans decades of imaginative storytelling through costume, puppetry, life drawing and mixed media. Trained in theatre design at Wimbledon School of Art, Gerry brings a sense of drama, movement and shadow to his sculptural work.

His current pieces explore lighting, scale and texture using wire, clay, cloth and found objects – often rooted in life-drawing and years spent working with the world-renowned Little Angel Theatre in Islington.

You’ll find Gerry’s work bursting with narrative – each piece a character, a moment, a stage.

David has enjoyed a lifelong exploration of creati David has enjoyed a lifelong exploration of creativity through painting, drawing, sculpture and making. After graduating from Newcastle University, he dedicated his career to the arts as a teacher and examiner, inspiring students of all ages.

Now based in Suffolk, his recent work draws on the evolving natural landscape, particularly the rewilding of farmland and the return of wildlife. This deep connection to place is reflected in his expressive landscapes, seascapes and beach scenes, created in a range of media including ink and wash and experimental mixed techniques.

David is also a published author of poetry and short stories – some of which are paired with his visual works to evoke a layered narrative experience.

While not all artists will be taking part, don't forget Suffolk Open Studios’ upcoming Christmas at Clare exhibition. A wonderful opportunity to discover local art and pick up something truly unique.

Working from her studio in Harkstead since 1973, U Working from her studio in Harkstead since 1973, Usch Spettigue has built a remarkable reputation for her colour-rich, sculptural porcelain pots. Each piece is designed as a one-off artefact – expressive and contemporary, yet still retaining its basic function.

Thrown on the wheel and single-fired in an electric kiln, Usch’s vessels are as tactile as they are visually striking. Her use of porcelain gives her work a delicate translucency and fine form, often elevated with vibrant glazes or surface textures that highlight the interplay of colour and shape.

A selected member of both Anglian Potters and the Suffolk Craft Society, Usch has exhibited widely across East Anglia, London, the West Country, York and Germany — with a following that appreciates both her aesthetic originality and her deep-rooted commitment to craft.

Catherine Smith’s work is a lyrical exploration Catherine Smith’s work is a lyrical exploration of landscape, interiors and memory – combining observational drawing with abstract expression to evoke a deeply personal sense of place.

Working in water-based media, Catherine responds to the shapes, gestures and colours of the world around her. Her pieces are both rooted in reality and abstracted through experience – capturing not just what she sees, but how it feels to be there.

With a background in graphic design and community arts, Catherine began exhibiting in 2015 and has since shown work across East Anglia and beyond. She is a member of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists and Echo Arts, and has received multiple awards including:
🏆 Cambridge News Award – Outstanding Contemporary Watercolour (2017)
🏆 Royal Watercolour Society Award – SEAW (2022)

Whether drawing inspiration from Suffolk’s landscapes or the spaces and events that shape her life, Catherine’s paintings are quiet, powerful reflections of presence and memory.

For Meryem Siemmond, stone carving is more than a For Meryem Siemmond, stone carving is more than a skill – it’s a meditative and deeply intuitive journey that brings nature, form, and philosophy into harmony. Based in Suffolk, Meryem creates tactile sculptures that celebrate the inherent beauty of the material – whether granite, marble, slate or wood.

Sometimes the shape is dictated by the stone itself; at other times, a concept guides her choice of material. But always, the physical act of carving – shaping surface texture, revealing sensual forms – lies at the heart of her process.

Her creative path has taken her across the globe: from traditional Dravidian carving villages in southern India to workshops in Italy, Spain, Morocco and Germany. Her experience is as wide-ranging as it is rich – including time spent as a humanist activist, software engineer and graphic designer, before dedicating herself to sculpture full-time.

Meryem’s work moves between abstract exploration and naturalistic forms, inviting viewers to pause and connect – both with the material and with themselves.

Liz Shackleton’s work honours the tradition of t Liz Shackleton’s work honours the tradition of textiles as storytelling – hand-crafted, functional, and rooted in history. Now based back on the east coast, Liz creates hooked and progged rugs, quilts, and 3D textile pieces using recycled wool, cashmere, and alpaca.

Having lived and worked abroad, her creative world is richly influenced by ethnic textiles, cultural artefacts and global colour palettes. She uses fabric like a paint palette – dyeing, layering, and stitching until she finds the perfect hue or texture.

A lifelong maker and educator, Liz co-founded the Ely Textile Group and has run countless workshops, events and community projects across the UK. Her work combines traditional rag rug techniques with abstract, painterly designs – often sparked by nature, sometimes imagined entirely in the mind’s eye.

Each piece is a celebration of sustainability, creativity and craft heritage – made with simple tools, skilled hands, and a love for textiles that spans continents and decades.

With a name that reflects happy accidents and beau With a name that reflects happy accidents and beautiful discoveries, Serendipity is the creative home of Patricia Sanders – an artist inspired by nature, texture and the unexpected.

Patricia’s work combines her love of painting with the expressive possibilities of wire, often incorporating natural materials she’s found on walks. From delicate copper trees to intricate wire forms mounted on wood, her pieces feel rooted in the landscape while offering something entirely original.

Her art journey began with a career change and a Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design – a turning point that led her to explore the sculptural potential of wire. Ever since, she’s been experimenting, creating, and letting her materials guide her.
