Welcome to Suffolk Open Studios

This year in June there will be around 110 artists and makers around the county as part of Suffolk Open Studios - opening their doors to the public at weekends, so you can have a look behind the scenes and see them in action. Come and visit us to see a wealth of art and craft, and the inspiration that goes into creating it.

Chairman's View

On behalf of all participating artists I extend a really warm welcome to Open Studios 2017.
Suffolk Open Studios is an opportunity to see the extraordinary artistic talent there is here in the huge beautiful county of Suffolk.

This is my first year as Chairwoman and I look forward to supporting the artists, who create such diverse and exceptional work. The Open Studios is providing you with an opportunity to connect with the artists, their work, and observing the creation of work in progress. It is encouraging to see so many of you so inspired by their creativity that you travel from studio to studio to see the next joyful artwork.

You will find a wide and wonderful range of disciplines expressed in paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolour. Look around and you will see beautiful photographs, collage, ceramics and textiles, jewellery, glassware and mosaics. There are printmakers, sculptors and painters. Drawings in pencil, ink, charcoal and pastels abound.  There are so many different media to explore.

Because there are so many studios to visit we plan exhibitions in some areas so that you can become familiar with the artists' work beforehand. Artists in areas of the county group together and create ‘Hubs’ during Open Studios, either by showing in one venue/studio, as they live in remote areas, or by sharing as a group with similar views on their work.  This is interesting for the visitors because of the dynamic of the collection of their work in one area. The ‘Trails’ are popular as they become communities for artists in those areas and the brochure and shows you a route from one studio to another that is easy to follow.

Using your directory, you can see where the Trails are for you to explore, finding a string of nearby studios, stopping at interesting and welcoming pubs on the way as you travel through the glorious countryside. There is a lot to see so planning is a good idea.  Sometimes you find an artist who is so interesting, who's work is so engaging that you stay a long time, and hopefully buy their work.

Art is for all and it a vital part of our lives and by connecting with the artists we can all share the creative process at each studio. The Suffolk Open Studios makes art accessible, where you can learn about the processes involved and experience the moment of inspiration. You are welcome to purchase their work, which is always great value.

"To create art, you need the Hand, the Eye and the Heart"
