A message from our Chairman

"Welcome to Open Studios, in June this year around 130 Suffolk artists opened their doors to the public. Our Open Studio Event took place over 4 weekends in June, so is sadly over for this year, however many of our members will open their studios by appointment, so feel free to contact them individually.

Spanning a huge range of art, including oils, watercolours, acrylics, photography, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glassware, sculpture, 2D and 3D mixed media, printmaking, mosaics and much more, the Open Studios event grows bigger each year with more artists participating and more members of the public visiting the studios.

I am passionate to see Suffolk Open Studios develop further.  Art should be accessible and this is a great opportunity for people to meet artists, ask them questions about their inspiration and choice of medium. It’s welcoming, friendly and not at all pretentious. The whole point is that artists want people to come and visit them – artists welcome the chance to share their work with a wider audience.

As Suffolk Open Studios covers such a big area, visitors are encouraged to use this website and our paper directory in advance to check routes and opening hours, and to make a day of it, planning a route to visit a range of studios and a local pub or café for lunch. It’s a fun day out, and an opportunity to learn something new. There’s no pressure to buy, though many artists will have items available for sale or to commission if requested.  Please don’t be embarrassed to walk out of a studio with nothing but something to remember.

I am keen to attract new artists to join. Creating art whether visual or written is usually a lonely experience with only one’s own company to keep and judgement to fall back on.  Being part of an open studio network gives artists a sense of belonging and of being part of a group of like-minded individuals.  All members are given exposure via this website, which also publicises upcoming exhibitions, and they have the option of participation in the Open Studios event.

In the lead up to the Open Studios event, some artists will be participating in Art About Town, whereby they collaborate with friendly local shops, cafes and restaurants to exhibit work to help promote their work. Keep an eye out for artwork in towns near you, next May. And don’t forget that there are many artists taking part in exciting and interesting trails and hubs, so do look out for them."
