Welcome to Suffolk Open Studios
Artist Dick Wolsey in his studio
A message from our Chairman
"Welcome to Open Studios, in June this year over 130 Suffolk artists will be opening their doors to the public. Spanning a huge range of art, including oils, watercolours, acrylics, photography, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glassware, sculpture, 2D and 3D mixed media, printmaking, mosaics and much more, the Open Studios event grows bigger each year with more artists participating and more members of the public visiting the studios.
I am passionate to see Suffolk Open Studios develop further. Art should be accessible and this is a great opportunity for people to meet artists, ask them questions about their inspiration and choice of medium. It’s welcoming, friendly and not at all pretentious. The whole point is that artists want people to come and visit them – artists welcome the chance to share their work with a wider audience.
As Suffolk Open Studios covers such a big area, visitors are encouraged to use this website and our paper directory in advance to check routes and opening hours, and to make a day of it, planning a route to visit a range of studios and a local pub or café for lunch. It’s a fun day out, and an opportunity to learn something new. There’s no pressure to buy, though many artists will have items available for sale or to commission if requested. Please don’t be embarrassed to walk out of a studio with nothing but something to remember.
I am keen to attract new artists to join. Creating art whether visual or written is usually a lonely experience with only one’s own company to keep and judgement to fall back on. Being part of an open studio network gives artists a sense of belonging and of being part of a group of like-minded individuals. All members are given exposure via this website, which also publicises upcoming exhibitions, and they have the option of participation in the Open Studios event.
In the lead up to the Open Studios event, some artists will be participating in Art About Town, whereby they collaborate with friendly local shops, cafes and restaurants to exhibit work to help promote their work. Keep an eye out for artwork in towns near you, from 19-31 May 2014. And don’t forget that there are many artists taking part in exciting and interesting trails and hubs, so do look out for them."
I'm sorry but you are too late to join us as a full member and open your studio with us in 2014, but you can still become an associate member with an artist's profile on this website.
